Case Study: Acid Rain
Director, Designer, Animator
FedUp Studio Lab reached out to me to commission an ident for the launch of their new website. The brief was fairy open, but with the request that the film feature ducks and be quirky.
Letting my imagination run free, I jotted down an idea where “acid rain” was causing two ducks to get high. I created an animatic for the idea and pitched it to the studio directors. They loved the idea and gave the go ahead for design and animation to begin.
Process & Software
Three applications were used to produce the ident. Procreate, Photoshop, and After Effects.
Frame by frame animation was roughed out, cleaned up, coloured and toned in Procreate (an App on the iPad).
Background illustrations and additional frame by frame animation were created in Photoshop.
And compositing and additional bits of camera animation were done in After Effects. The AE project was passed over to Fred from FedUp who finalised the ident with a bit of post-production (including vignetting and parallax animation).
For a bit of behind the scenes, FedUp and I talked through the process of frame by frame animating.
This was such a fun project to be involved with and I’m delighted with the result – When life gives you a rainy day, play in the puddles… especially if the weather forecast gives you a high chance of ACID rain!
